It is ! St. Cwyfan's on Anglesey in North Wales is known as Eglwys Bach y Môr – the little church in the sea. A real hidden gem. --- ****Words** *The Moor* It was like a church to me. I entered it on soft foot, Breath held like a cap in the hand. It was quiet. What God was there made himself felt, Not listened to, in clean colours That brought a moistening of the eye, In movement of the wind over grass. There were no prayers said. But stillness Of the heart's passions -- that was praise Enough; and the mind's cession Of its kingdom. I walked on, Simple and poor, while the air crumbled And broke on me generously as bread. R. S. Thomas --- ****Observations** ## The Citadel ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/2026/08/66FB0E93-43D0-4824-881F-9A5B539A01F4_1_105_c.jpeg) **It’s been hot and sticky and the grass around these parts seems baked into the earth beneath it. I head out on a run along an ancient track that leads towards Cheesden and the Rossendale Hills.** On the way there I walk past a big silver SUV tucked into the side of the lane. It’s empty, but I can feel the heat coming off the engine and hear the clicking of the contracting radiator. The tyres press into the baked earth. For a moment everything seems to be pushing out heat - metal, rubber, gravel, soil. There’s the promise of respite up ahead, with a darkness in the clouds moving towards the Pennines. It’s been a long time since we have had any substantial rain. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/2026/08/85C3D769-608A-458D-BAFE-5B4ADE6F4C49_1_201_a-1.jpeg) Along Scotland Lane I feel it first - a kind of mizzle that comes not in great drops, but as something akin to stardust hovering just above the surface and then descending in soft ribbons of gossamer. Little pricks of light seem to billow from the heavens, shrouding the view and coating everything in their path, adding such a gloss to the landscape that it begins to shimmer. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/2026/08/IMG_0744-1.jpeg) I drink the wetness in - and then I see something through the haze. First I see one and then another, and then a host of them - little webs, sticky entrapments dotted across the heather and gorse. The more I look, the more they appear. It feels as though a fuse has blown somewhere in the mechanics of nature and the magic veil has been removed. Every blade of grass, every stem and seed head has become part of an intricate labyrinth, made visible only because the atmosphere has changed. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/2026/08/IMG_0748-1.jpeg) I look at it all in wonderment and try to take it in with one glance, as far as I can see. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/2026/08/IMG_0758-1.jpeg) The whole moor seems inhabited by these woven hamlets, towers, bridges and suspended roads. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/2026/08/IMG_0764-1.jpeg) After a time, a thought starts to grow inside me - a kind of foretelling - that somewhere down the line we will discover that all of them are strung together into such a web of wonder that they are able to communicate from one end to the next, like the mycorrhizal networks beneath our woods. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/2026/08/IMG_0751-1.jpeg) I find it hard to believe that this world has existed in parallel, unseen - a World Wide Web that seems less intrusive, more sustainable, intricate and inherently cooperative than our own man-made one. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/2026/08/IMG_0782-1.jpeg) And perhaps that is the wonder of it - that nothing here has arrived, and nothing has really changed. The citadels, threads and ghostly architectures were here yesterday, and the day before that, woven through a landscape I thought I knew. It was only the atmosphere that altered the lens. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/2026/08/IMG_0747-1.jpeg) There is something hopeful in that - especially when our own lives begin to feel fixed and the world feels stitched up. Sometimes the smallest change can alter everything - a shift in light, a turn in the weather, a step beyond the usual path - and suddenly what seemed ordinary opens into revelation. I think that is what the moor offered me this morning - a reminder that the world we think we know is only one version of it, one layer among many, and - however enclosed things may sometimes seem - another world is already waiting in parallel, trembling on the edge of visibility. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/2026/08/IMG_0767-1.jpeg) ****✨ Please share this if you can - it really does help.
