## ✨The Treasure Hoard Gazetteer✨

The Gazetteer is my attempt to put a little wonder back into a world that can sometimes feel disenchanted - to open things up rather than shut them down.

## **On Becoming Rich Beyond Measure**

At work surrounded by treasures.

**Today, I feel like the richest man in the world.**

**There was a time when breakdown and depression took me to the depths. Photography led me out into the world and taught me how to see again.**

Through the camera, I began to find things and places that changed me: a story tucked beneath a misericord, a four-thousand-year-old tree, or light falling across a Saxon carving.

Encounter by encounter - place by place - these things helped me rediscover a sense of wonder.

I suppose that is how I became rich - not in money or possessions, but in the faded and the frayed, in the warm ochre glow of carved oolitic, and in marks left by hands long gone. Together, these things began to disperse the clouds that hung so heavily over me - and, slowly but steadily, I dared to dream.

Recently, the Genius Loci Digest reached a series of milestones - 5 years old, in one form or another; 1,000 posts; and 100,000 miles travelled in Woody, my camper van.

To mark the moment, I’ve been working behind the scenes to share the places and things that have moved me - refashioning my embryonic record of them into a new **Treasure Hoard Gazetteer.**

The Genius Loci archive has grown richer over the years. The Gazetteer draws upon that deep humus, bringing some of its hidden treasures back into the light.

It offers a visual and interactive way to explore the remarkable details, objects and places I have encountered over many years of looking closely.

Angel at St. Nicholas, King's Lynn

Each entry (and there will be more) has truly made me feel special, so I wanted the hoard to become more than an index. I wanted to create a place where curiosity can roam - a soft launch for the imagination.

Chapter House, Lincoln Cathedral

At one o’clock one morning this week, I found myself adding more treasures.
I should have been exhausted. Instead, I felt wonderfully alive - full of awe at seeing these scattered encounters begin to form a constellation. Perhaps the Gazetteer should carry a warning - rattling through so many remarkable things at speed may induce a heightened state of wonder.

These treasures carry narratives that can help us understand who we are and change the way we see the world. Having survived thus far, they know something of humanity.

Together, they form a vast cultural repository of memory, labour, belief, beauty and meaning.Their survival matters because they give us something against which to place our own lives. They remind us that we are part of a longer story.

The Gazetteer is my attempt to share some of that wonder - to create a visual cosmos of photographs, paintings and words through which others might form their own attachments to places.

When we care about something, we are more likely to notice when it is neglected, diminished or threatened. We are more likely to visit it, talk about it, support it and pass its story on. Wonder is not an escape from the world. Sometimes it is the beginning of caring more deeply about it.

## Introducing the Treasure Hoard Gazetteer.

### There are several ways into the Gazetteer.

You can choose a place on the map, submit yourself to chance, gather treasures into a journey or use the route planner to see what might be waiting along the road.

**And when you have explored it, I would genuinely love to know where it took you.**

Please leave a comment beneath this Digest and tell me. Seeing the different paths that open for other people is one of the greatest pleasures of this Digest.

## Help Share The Treasure Hoard Gazetteer

Let’s scatter a little magic dust.✨

***If you recognise a church, museum, landscape, craft, building or organisation within the Gazetteer, please share the relevant entry with the people who care for it. Let them know that their place has found its way into the Treasure Hoard.***

Who knows where it might lead?

Looking at the map - it is so hard to believe that I've actually seen these things. I'm a changed person for it. If you're not able to get out and see them - I hope that the Gazetteer brings you closer.

It is my sincerest wish that you find something here to mesmerise, intrigue or inspire you - something that helps you pause, look again and experience the layered world around us.

And perhaps, when you emerge, you might feel a little richer too, like me.

A heartfelt thanks for all you support over the last 5 years, 1000 posts and 100,000 miles.

*This Gazetteer is dedicated to the memory of David Morris. A close friend and mentor who is sadly no longer with us. He taught me that it was possible to make coherent the incoherent and that the seemingly innocuous minutiae of our lives are more important than we will ever know.*‌
