### The First Camera
Breakdown, visual anchoring and the first photograph at Tynemouth Priory: the moment the camera offered a way out.
Gentle note: this post discusses depression and suicidal thoughts, before reaching a hopeful resolution.

**Pause**What detail in the room around you could act as an anchor?

The camera first offered a way out. In time, that moment of escape became a practice of attention.

### How Photography Taught Me How To See
The emergency act becomes a repeatable practice: slowing down and noticing the fleeting correspondence between light and shade.

**Pause**What is the light doing where you are right now?
[Open this stop ↗](https://www.digest.andymarshall.co/loci-11photography-ways-of-seeing/) ○Mark as walked
Once we begin to notice light, a building can stop being scenery and become an instrument of revelation.
3. 03 ✓
![A shaft of light inside St Ellyw's Church](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/2026/01/St.-Ellyws-40.jpg) Mini Camino**Walked**Stop 03
Stop three · The revelation
5 min
### The Camera Obscura Church
At St Ellyw’s, the building itself becomes a camera and the outside world travels into the church along a slender shaft of light.

**Pause**What ordinary opening is quietly framing another world?
[Open this stop ↗](https://www.digest.andymarshall.co/loci/) ○Mark as walked
A shaft of light can transform a church. Another person’s vision can transform a landscape we thought we already knew.

Stop four · The return
6 min
### Looking Through Hockney’s Eyes
Art, childhood memory and the recovery of beginner’s eyes reconnect a Paris gallery with the promise of Yorkshire.

**Pause**What did the world look like before you learned to name it?
[Open this stop ↗](https://www.digest.andymarshall.co/loci-looking-through-hockneys-eyes/) ○Mark as walked
But beginner’s eyes do not always require a lens. Sometimes they ask us to put everything down.

Stop five · The arrival

### The Rollright Stones
The camera, watch and devices are put away. Only then does an orange butterfly appear against the ancient stone.

**Pause**What becomes visible when you put the device away?
