## Behind the Photograph - Little Folk

**I took this photograph over the weekend and used the** [**rule of thirds**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule%5Fof%5Fthirds?ref=digest.andymarshall.co) **to emphasise the sign. It's a wonderfully quirky piece of Cumbrian signage, and I love it when people or organisations break through norms, especially when they do so with a little humour and imagination. It interrupts the familiar language of roadside warnings and makes us look twice.**

Compositionally, the sign occupies the right-hand third of the photograph, whilst the road draws the eye into the distance. The hedgerows and overhanging trees frame the lane, creating a sense of enclosure before the landscape opens up into the sunlight beyond. The road acts as a leading line, but it also offers something more - a sense of anticipation, of a journey into the unknown.

Yet, for me, the photograph wasn't complete without a human presence. I stopped and waited for somebody to come into view. This was the *decisive moment* \- not simply the act of pressing the shutter, but recognising when all the elements of the photograph came together to tell a story. I wouldn't have taken the photograph without the person in the frame.

The person walking along the road is deliberately small within the frame. Their diminutive scale reinforces the words on the sign, whilst also giving the photograph depth and a sense of proportion. Had they been much closer, the relationship might have become too obvious. At this distance, there's just enough ambiguity to invite the viewer to make their own connections.

And there's another layer to the photograph that appeals to me - something psychological, and perhaps even a little philosophical.

The sign refers to 'little folk', those elusive, fantastical beings of folklore, yet the person walking towards us is an adult. That juxtaposition opens up a rather lovely possibility. Perhaps the sign is speaking to something within all of us, regardless of our age.

In that sense, the photograph becomes unexpectedly inclusive. The sign might appear to refer to a particular kind of little person, but the adult in the distance reminds us that none of us is entirely grown up. We all belong in the picture.

And perhaps that's what I enjoy most about photography. A seemingly ordinary encounter can reveal something beyond its immediate subject.
