HAY-ON-WYE TO LLANGOLLEN

# Offa’s Dyke.
*A sense*
*of place.*

A resource in words, photographs,
art and maps.

This is the home of my Offa’s Dyke experience. I’ve brought together the things I wrote, photographed and painted along the way, to share something of the joy and atmosphere of being there.

01 / THE WRITING

## Read the *landscape.*

What draws us to a place? What do we notice when we slow down? Three reflections, from the anticipation of the walk to the buildings along its edge.

[![A flint church wall with an arched opening.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/2026/09/GPxYWjwWsAAzps6-1.jpeg)01](https://www.digest.andymarshall.co/andy-marshalls-genius-loci-digest-102/)

BEFORE THE WALK / 11 SEP 2026

### [The presence of absence.](https://www.digest.andymarshall.co/andy-marshalls-genius-loci-digest-102/)

Gaps, lapses and silences. The spaces between things, and the curiosity that drew me towards a landscape between two worlds.

[Read the reflection ↗](https://www.digest.andymarshall.co/andy-marshalls-genius-loci-digest-102/)

ON THE WALK / 25 SEP 2026

### [Finding common ground.](https://www.digest.andymarshall.co/andy-marshalls-genius-loci-digest-104/)

Hollow lanes, changing weather and conversations on the path. Walking a line of division, I found myself thinking about connection and belonging.

THE BUILT BORDER / COMING 2 OCT 2026

### [The shock of the boundary.](https://www.digest.andymarshall.co/the-shock-of-the-boundary/)

Castles, farms, towns and churches. Looking at the ways a borderland has shaped its buildings, and how people have made their lives here.

02 / MAPS & FIELD NOTES

## Put yourself
*on the path.*

Follow the walk as it happened, or find the photographs on a map. Two ways to explore the same stretch of borderland at your own pace.

## Time to *look & linger.*

A building seen from the path. A page filled at the end of the day. Different ways of spending time with a place.

04 / SMALL DISCOVERIES

## Stay a *little longer.*

Sometimes a single detail opens up a much larger story.

[![The pavement petrol pumps outside Bunner’s Store in Montgomery.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/size/w1600/2026/09/IMG_5933-2.jpeg)](https://www.digest.andymarshall.co/treasure-hoard-the-petrol-pumps-at-bunners-store-montgomery-wales/)

FROM THE TREASURE HOARD / MONTGOMERY

### [The petrol pumps at Bunner’s.](https://www.digest.andymarshall.co/treasure-hoard-the-petrol-pumps-at-bunners-store-montgomery-wales/)

A hose swinging over the pavement, a crowded shop window, and a scene that is still part of everyday life.

BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH / BREIDDEN HILL

### [The helicopter & the wounded hill.](https://www.digest.andymarshall.co/behind-the-photograph-6/)

A tiny machine against an immense rock face. A photograph that asks us to look again at our vulnerability and our power.
