01 / The journey

## An Illuminated
Journey.

![Andy Marshall photographing the Herkenrode glass at Lichfield Cathedral](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/2025/08/WhatsApp-Image-2025-04-25-at-09.41.38-1.jpeg)

In April 2025 I was tasked with travelling to seven English cathedrals and one Royal Peculiar to photograph stained glass for Janet Gough’s book *Divine Light*. The work took me more than 1,000 miles across the country - sleeping in Woody, rising before dawn and learning the character of each building through its changing light.

02 / My encounters

## Windows that
hold a story.

![Andy Marshall standing with his tripod in coloured stained-glass light](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/size/w1600/2023/09/dji_fly_20230705_164110_569_1688571910997_aeb.jpg)

My encounters with stained glass have shown me how a pane can carry grief, devotion, politics, memory and hope. Through these visits and photographs, I explore what happens when a window becomes more than decoration and begins to alter our relationship with a place.

[ ![Ruth's Window bearing the words Hold on to that which is good](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/2026/05/4228106D-5DF3-4433-B184-87DF51F522E3_1_201_a-1-1.jpeg) ↗ Richmond - Alan Davis Ruth's Window - holding on to what is good I found a modern memorial window in which loss is given form, colour and the possibility of renewal. ](https://www.digest.andymarshall.co/andy-marshalls-genius-loci-digest-22-may-2026/) [ ![The Great East Window glowing within York Minster](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/2026/06/York-Minster-Visit-Two-FInals-10-1.jpg) ↗ York - St William An ecology of memory in glass At York I followed the continuous line connecting pilgrimage, story, architecture and John Thornton's medieval figures. ](https://www.digest.andymarshall.co/andy-marshalls-genius-loci-digest-12-june-2026/) [ ![Andy Marshall photographing the medieval glass in the chancel at Norbury](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/2026/08/norbury-1-9-1-1.jpg) ↗ Norbury - medieval survival The same light, in the same place Photographing glass installed in 1306 brought me within sight of the people who first stood before it. ](https://www.digest.andymarshall.co/treasure-hoard-the-medieval-stained-glass-at-st-mary-and-st-barlok-norbury/)

> Stained glass softens the mood, loosens the geometry and provides moments of magic.

03 / The artist at work

## Where light
is shaped.

![A silhouetted figure beside Tom Denny's illuminated stained-glass work](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/size/w2000/2026/09/Denny-Temp-51.jpg)

I was fortunate to spend time with Tom Denny in his studio, camera in hand, as he worked among pigment, glass and half-light. Later I followed the work to St John at Tisbury. These visits allowed me to witness - rather than explain - how an idea becomes a window, and how the window is changed again by the place that receives it.

[ ![Tom Denny examining stained glass in the half-light of his studio](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/2024/06/Denny-Temp-1-2.jpg) ↗ My visit to Tom Denny's studio In the place where light is shaped Photographing Tom at work among pigment, glass and the ideas from which a window slowly emerges. ](https://www.digest.andymarshall.co/andy-marshalls-genius-loci-digest-28-june-2024/) [ ![Tom Denny stained glass at St John, Tisbury](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/2026/04/tis-6-1-1.jpg) ↗ My return to Tisbury When the window meets the building Encountering Tom’s completed work within St John and discovering what it gives to the people who gather there. ](https://www.digest.andymarshall.co/andy-marshalls-genius-loci-digest-97/) [ ![A close view of Tom Denny's stained glass at Tisbury](https://storage.ghost.io/c/2e/b6/2eb6d776-18dd-41f1-a2d1-b76fa2d605be/content/images/size/w2000/2026/09/Denny-Temp-51.jpg) ↗ A closer look The Tisbury window Spend time with the finished glass - its layers of colour, narrative and emotion opened up in detail. ](https://www.digest.andymarshall.co/treasure-hoard-the-tom-denny-tisbury-window/)
