**The gateway and house are listed together at Grade I.**

The gateway dates from the fourteenth century.

The adjoining house is later. Historic England records that it was rebuilt during the eighteenth or early nineteenth century, while retaining sections of older masonry at ground level.

This explains its wonderful patchwork appearance: flint, stone rubble and brick gathered beneath an old tiled roof and tile-hung gable. Rather than presenting a single architectural moment, it visibly records centuries of alteration and repair. There's something that is endearing about the building - a home spliced between two other buildings of differing functions.

Together, house and gate form the southern threshold of the Cathedral Close - the domestic building appearing to grow organically from the medieval gateway it has guarded for generations
