# ✨ Treasure Hoard: The Door Clasp at Brougham Hall

**At Brougham Hall, history offers you its hand. The bronze ring hangs from a fantastical beast’s mouth, alive with eyes, curling forms and the drama of a wild beast.**

Its authority comes from Durham Cathedral’s twelfth-century Sanctuary Ring. There, a fugitive who seized the ring could claim the church’s protection for 37 days. Brougham’s example carries that association rather than a sanctuary right of its own.

The knocker now at the Hall is not the original. Its successor was recreated from drawings and a carved wooden model, then cast in 1993\. Replacement it may be, but its touchable symbolism remains thrillingly alive on the heavy, time-worn door before us.
