**The surviving walls in Peterborough Cathedral’s precincts belonged to the abbey infirmary, rebuilt between 1250 and 1262 by Abbot John de Caux. Here, sick and infirm monks received care in a great hall with seven bays and two aisles. After the Dissolution, the aisles were incorporated into houses.**

Amongst the weathered stone, the remnants of one generation have been folded into the making of another, giving the bones of an ancient building new life.
