A roofline with rhythm.

From across the room I see warm brick and blue sky. Up close, the tree breaks the line of windows.

The gables and chimneys in my sketch of St Leonard’s Close.

In my words.

I’ve photographed this row of houses for the Digest, too. In the sketch I left the notes right beside the things they describe. Look in the blue above the roofs and you’ll find one tucked beside the clustered chimneys.

When I sketched it during the golden hour and the raking light, the burnt umber of the bricks receded and the yellow ochre of the lime mortar joints seemed to glow.

The three houses stand beside St Leonard’s Church in Bridgnorth’s High Town, on the site of an earlier college. Historic England dates the Grade II* listed row to around 1625. Three little gabled porches step forward from the brick front, below windows divided by stone mullions.

The school’s history records that Sir William Whitmore leased the three houses to the town in 1639. One was for the pupils, one for the schoolmaster and one for the minister of St Leonard’s.

What you receive

The full drawing, including the handwritten notes and colour swatches, is captured as a 6,000 × 3,366 pixel JPEG with an embedded Adobe RGB (1998) colour profile.

A high-resolution digital image and printing guide to download and save. Printing and framing are not included. The purchase is for a digital file.

Printing your artwork

I’d suggest printing up to 50 × 28.1 cm at about 305 ppi. Ask your printer to fit the whole drawing without cropping. Leave a little space around the image if you’d like a mount.

Print at home or take the original file to a printer you trust. You choose the paper and finish, and what feels right to spend. The printing guide helps you keep the complete artwork and choose an appropriate size.

Personal use and licence

Make up to three personal prints. Print it your way with your own printer or outsource it to a professional printer.
