St. Oswald’s Church, Ashbourne, is one of Derbyshire’s most remarkable medieval churches. The present building dates largely from the early 13th century and was consecrated in 1241, although evidence suggests worship on the site stretches back to Saxon times, with traces of Norman and even earlier fabric surviving.

Inside are magnificent monuments to the Boothby, Cockayne and Bradbourne families, fine stained glass, and England’s oldest surviving brass consecration plate. It feels more like a cathedral than a church.
