An enclave, not an escape

Readers often describe the Digest as a balm to the complexities of modern life, a counter-narrative to our fast-changing world, and a place that helps them discover richer, more hopeful ways of seeing and navigating the present.

Why I make the Digest

In the late 1990s, a breakdown led me into depression and then, gradually, towards a new life through photography. Recovery meant learning to see again.

The camera drew me out of myself and into the material world. Buildings, landscapes and the poetry of place helped me navigate anxiety, widened what felt possible and taught me that the so called ordinary can hold extraordinary meaning.

In 2003 I won the Harold Samuel Prize for my thesis on genius loci in architecture. For more than twenty years since, I have worked as an architectural photographer, seeking out alternative stories in our surviving material culture and sharing them through photographs and words.

Today, the Genius Loci Digest is my centre of gravity. Woody gets me to places at the right time and in the right light; the Digest lets me bring those discoveries home to you; and members make the journey sustainable.

What began as a way of learning to see has become a weekly record of more than five years on the road: a growing archive of encounters with historic Britain, shaped by more than twenty years of looking, listening and returning, then shared through photographs and words that help others see these places afresh.

I believe that developing curiosity and alternative ways of seeing is fundamental to how we navigate the present and contributes to a greater sense of connection and wellbeing.
