And it’s here, at this first hint of light, that I’m always stopped short by the sight of winter trees standing in silhouette: its whole architecture pressed into sharp relief. I never quite understand why it moves me so deeply.

And then, without warning - a chiaroscuro. The landscape delivers its crescendo: the spire of the Marble Church piercing the firmament from a brace of gargoyles, that project above a dip in the distant Clwydian hills.

The joy of coming across a busy market (with shops open in the square) during twilight is beyond compare. I made for the local bakery and bought a Danish and Coffee and walked around the square, taking it all in.

Whilst I walk along High Street, the buildings are tinted with a golden hue. As the sky softens, I can sense the day turning in on itself, the light tempered, beaten and bossed into thinness. This golden hour is turning blue.
