BUILDINGS ALONG OFFA’S DYKE

THE SHOCK
OF THE
BOUNDARY.

ABOUT THE COLLECTION

I photographed these buildings while walking from Hay-on-Wye to Llangollen.

Some are close to the Dyke. Others stand in the surrounding towns and countryside. Together, they show how people have built and lived in the borderlands over time.

Dinas Brân on the hill above Llangollen.

Whilst watching the clouds skid over the Shropshire Hills, I found myself hovering over the borderlands and imagining the centuries running in time-lapse after the great imposition of the dyke...

Castles, re-used Iron Age hillforts and farms enclosed by high courtyard walls become signs of successive pressures - ways of inhabiting a landscape in which movement, authority and protection mattered.
