Carved in Tournai around 1150–1200 from dense, dark limestone traditionally called marble, Winchester Cathedral’s monumental font is among England’s finest Romanesque survivals.
Henry III was baptised here in 1207, and the font remains in use today.
On the side, etched into the Tournai marble is a depiction of a building that looks much like the transepts in the photo below.
The C12th font is a marvel - and depicts scenes from the life of St. Nicholas.
