The Norman beakheads decorate the west door at Iffley from top to bottom. Look closely: each has its own character. It’s a gripping pattern that echoes the biting beasts of earlier Insular and Viking-age decoration. They set off a facade full of energy and dynamism.

Long snouts curl around the roll mouldings as though the doorway itself were being held in a row of fantastic jaws. Some appear birdlike, others lupine or almost human, their differences becoming clearer as light travels across the stone.

The effect is both comic and unsettling. These creatures turn the act of entry into a passage through a living threshold. Beyond them, chevrons pulse inward while the outer carvings introduce Evangelists and signs of the zodiac. Sacred order and unruly imagination meet here, making the whole west front feel alive.
