Henry Wilson’s 1913 pulpit at Ripon Cathedral is one of the most expressive I have had the privilege to photograph.
The bronze seems not so much worked as coaxed into life. It has a restless energy. Resting upon marble, it feels almost organic - as though it has grown from the cathedral floor and might continue growing.
It is a thrilling marriage of artistry, craftsmanship and material imagination: an early-twentieth-century masterpiece in which Arts and Crafts discipline flowers into the sensuous freedom of Art Nouveau.
